Orangutan is a species of great ape that inhabits the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia and Malaysia. It is the largest arboreal mammal in the world, with long arms and reddish-brown hair. The species is divided into three subspecies: the Bornean orangutan ( P. p. pygmaeus ), the Sumatran orangutan ( P. p. abelii ), and the Tapanuli orangutan ( P. p. tapanuliensis ). The latter was identified as a distinct subspecies in 2017, making it the most recently discovered great ape. ¹ Orangutans are highly intelligent and share about 97% of their DNA with humans. They can use tools, communicate with gestures and sounds, and exhibit cultural variation. ²

Orangutans feed mainly on fruit, but also eat leaves, bark, insects, and occasionally meat. They are mostly solitary, except for mothers and their dependent offspring. Adult males are distinguished by their large size, long canine teeth, and cheek pads or flanges. They produce loud calls, known as long calls, to attract females and deter rivals. Orangutans have a slow reproductive rate, as females give birth only once every six to eight years. ³

Orangutans are classified as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, as they face severe threats from habitat loss, deforestation, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. More than half of the orangutan population has been lost since 1950, and some experts predict that they could become extinct in the wild within the next few decades. ⁴ Conservation efforts include protecting their habitat, rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured orangutans, and raising awareness and support for their plight. ⁵

This product is a digital reproduction of a vintage lithograph of Orangutan, made with the lithography method. Lithography is a planographic printing process that makes use of the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used mostly for musical scores and maps. ⁶ Lithography can produce detailed and subtle artwork with a range of tones.

You can download a low-resolution image of the lithograph for free, which you can use for personal purposes only. If you want a high-quality image, you can purchase a high-resolution image in pixel or vector format, which you can use for commercial purposes. You can also order various products with the image printed on them, such as posters, stickers, notebooks, mugs, and t-shirts.
