Mandrill is a large Old World monkey native to west central Africa, from Cameroon to the Congo River. It is one of the most colorful mammals in the world, with red and blue skin on its face and buttocks. The species is sexually dimorphic, as males have a larger body, longer canine teeth and brighter coloring. Males can reach up to 35 kg (77 pounds) and 90 cm (3 feet) in length, excluding the tail. Females are much smaller and duller in color. ¹²

Mandrill feeds on fruit, roots, insects, and small reptiles and amphibians. It lives in large groups called “hordes” that can number in the hundreds. The hordes are composed of several smaller units of females and their offspring, and one or a few dominant males. The males have a loud howl that can be heard up to 5 km (3 miles) away, and they use it to communicate with other groups and mark their territories. ¹²

Mandrill is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, due to habitat loss and hunting for bushmeat. It is protected in several national parks and reserves, such as Lopé National Park in Gabon, where it is considered a flagship species for conservation. ¹²

This product is a digital reproduction of a vintage lithograph of Mandrill, made with the lithography method. Lithography is a planographic printing process that makes use of the immiscibility of oil and water. The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used mostly for musical scores and maps. ³ Lithography can produce detailed and subtle artwork with a range of tones.

You can download a low-resolution image of the lithograph for free, which you can use for personal purposes only.
